Creative Long Exposure Demonstrations and Ideas

Long exposure photography is a technique in which you use a slower shutter speed to capture motion trails. If there’s no ambient light, you can use this method to create and capture light trails using a light source and create magnificent-looking images. We also refer to this as light painting. In today’s video, photographer Kyle Nutt shares 5 amazing long-exposure photography ideas that you can use to create surreal-looking photographs:

In order to take light painting images, there are a few considerations that you must take:

  • Light painting images come out better if the ambient light is low. If you’re working indoors, it helps if you turn off the lights and close the curtains to block external light.
  • If there’s a risk of overexposing the image when using a slow shutter speed, use a higher f-number to narrow down the aperture.
  •  Use light sources like glow sticks, torchlight, or even sparklers to paint around your subject, or to create art in the open space. These days, you can even find specialized light sources for light painting that give unique and interesting patterns.
  • It helps a lot if the person handing the light is dressed in dark clothing to prevent them from showing up in the final image.

The process of light painting is very simple, and even the possibilities are endless. It’s like the light source that you’ll be holding is a paintbrush and the space around you is your canvas. The camera is just a medium to capture the process.
