Using a Focusing LED Light for Portrait Lighting Effects

What lighting you use and how you use it is key when it comes to taking studio photos. It sculpts the facial structure of the subject and sets the mood accordingly. And interestingly enough, there are a lot of types of lighting gear and techniques to help you take some amazing images in a studio. In this video, photographer Radhakrishnan Chakyat from Pixel Village talks about using a special lighting technique with a focusing LED light that’ll help you take stunning images for wedding, fashion, and portrait photography:

Chakyat demonstrates how you can create some stunning lighting effects using the Godox S30 Focus LED. The S30 is essentially a compact continuous light source that has a frosted lens at the front. You can modify the output of the S30 using different accessories like a projection head, lens attachment, gobos, iris diaphragm, color filters, and light modifiers.

One thing to keep in mind when using the S30 is that it is not a very powerful light. It does the job pretty well when working indoors. But, if you plan to mix it with daylight, it will not be able to keep up.

The S30 is compact yet pretty versatile. You can either use it as a single light source, or use multiple S30 to create dramatic lighting effects. The only catch is that the ambient light needs to be low to be able to see said effects.

What do you think of these effects in your photography?
