Having a good amount of photography knowledge is one thing. But when it comes to landing jobs as a photographer, it’s a totally different ball game. Of course being able to take good photographs helps, but that’s not going to cut it business-wise. Getting photography jobs is more about having the right connections and being able to market yourself better than others. In this video, photographer David Bergman from Adorama shares his top four tips that’ll help you to land more photography jobs:
The photography market is very much a competitive place. Once you reach a certain skill level, it’s a great idea to start monetizing your skills. But when doing so, you’ll be competing against other equally good, or even better photographers. So in order to sell yourself, you need to have an edge.
When looking to start a job as a photographer, persistence is key. Expect rejections. When approached, many will say no. But don’t take it to heart. You’re not the reason why they decline – a lot of things go into the decision. So, just keep on trying and don’t be afraid to continue your pursuit with every new opportunity you see. Even when you come across the scenario where many people aren’t responding at all, be sure to follow up with them on a regular basis. Your perseverance will definitely pay off.
And once you land some projects, think of ways you can develop a better relationship with that client. Do something special for them like sending them a ‘Thank You’ print. Keep in touch with them. This way, once the relationship is well and established, you can pitch them newer project ideas that will be beneficial for both of you.
