Amazing photographs are often captured with a combination of skill and luck—and on July 5, luck paid a rather dramatic visit to photographer Colleen Niska‘s wedding shoot. While photographing a newly married couple just outside of Saskatoon, Canada, one of Niska’s clients spotted a funnel cloud off in the distance. To Niska’s delight, the couple wanted to continue shooting as a tornado formed, and Niska made this image:
“I’ve dreamed about a day like this,” Niska captioned the gallery containing this photo. “Could NOT wait to post these! Pretty sure this will only happen once in my lifetime!”
Not surprisingly, the image has sparked mixed feedback, with some critiquing Niska’s dodging and burning techniques and others labeling her irresponsible for placing her clients in harm’s way. Despite the criticism, however, Niska’s photo has gone viral and, if the 12,762-and-counting likes on her Facebook page are any indication, it’s clear that her business will weather the storm.
We recently shared another photographer’s controversial image of a wedding portrait posed in front of a wildfire.
We want to hear from you! What do you think about this photo and others like it? Were the photographers right to keep shooting when their clients gave the OK?
