Tips for Photographing a Collection

Consider this: you feel strongly about your collection, right? You wouldn’t have put the effort into collecting all this stuff up if you didn’t find it fascinating. So let your photographic vision reflect your feelings about it all. This is to say that if a photo looks good to you -it’s probably pretty good. But give a little thought to showmanship -interesting backgrounds and props and all. Collect civil war pistols? You ought to have a flag in there somewhere. Costume jewelry? How about an ostrich-feather boa? Collect rocks? What about photographing them on the appropriate USGS topographic map? The one showing where you found the particular rock.

Remembering Tim Hetherington (1970 – April 20, 2011)

Very sad news in the photography world today. Tim Hetherington, the war photographer and Oscar nominee who was a director and producer of the film “Restrepo,” was killed in Libya Wednesday, and three photographers working beside him were critically wounded. It is reported that they were struck by a rocket-propelled grenade while working in the war-torn Libyan city of Misrata. Chris Hondros, a photographer working for Getty Images, sustained a head wound in the incident and remains in extremely critical condition. Guy Martin, a British citizen working for the Panos photo agency, had shrapnel wounds and underwent vascular surgery which improved his prospects.

Camera Flash Guide and Features

Power, expressed in Guide Number (GN), is a measure of how much light the flash will produce. GN is a non-standard unit of measure. It basically tells you how far away a subject can be from the source of the flash, where the flash is the primary light source, and the subject to still be properly lit. The problem with this is that the distance can be expressed in either feet or meters. There is often no way of knowing which it is. GN also assumes ISO100 and f1.0 so adjustments will have to be made in the calculations to account for real-world conditions. For instance, f1.0 lenses are very rare and extremely expensive.
