Tips for Creating a Professional Photography Portfolio

People love great pictures, and you can make a lot of money if you’re a great photographer. Although, for this to be the case, you need to first create a professional portfolio in order to attract great clients. To help you out, here are some tips on how to create an impressive photography portfolio:

Only Post the Best

Remember that the pictures you put in your portfolio are a representation of your work; therefore, you should include only the best. One of the best ways of having the best images is by taking as many photos as possible.

For example, if you’re taking a photo of a building, you should take as many photos as possible from different perspectives and with different settings. Then, go to your computer and edit the photos ruthlessly. You should not let an image with even a single mistake to make it into your portfolio.

Before you post an image to your portfolio, show it to a few of your friends. For the image to make it to the portfolio, it should get a “wow” from all of the people who see it.

The image should also be consistent with the primary body of work for which you want to be hired. For example, if you are interested in being hired to take wedding photos, the photos you post must be wedding-related.

Update Regularly

Just like in any business, you need to update your work. Although you should not update the portfolio daily, make the effort of updating them whenever you want to improve on the quality. For example, you might update after you buy a new and more powerful camera or lens that helps you take higher quality photos.

Be Organized

When posting the photos, make sure you are well organized. Ensure that the first picture you post is a killer. This is the image that introduces you and promises the client that there is more to come of the same quality.

For ideal print portfolio results, make mini-sequences of two to five images within a 20-image book. Balance the images and ensure that they complement each other. To get the attention of the client, you should avoid placing two wide shots on facing pages.

But also make sure the images that you place at the back of the portfolio are great. This is to leave a great memory. While you should ensure that the images you post are not huge, they should be big enough to do justice to your work.
