Man (and Camera!) Overboard: Blue Whale Tips Over Photographer’s Boat

When something surprising happens, is your first impulse to take a picture of it? That was Dale Frink’s first response when a very wet surprise happened while out at sea:

On July 2, Frink was out whale-watching when a pair of blue whales surfaced right behind him, capsizing the boat. Dale and the captain of the boat were rescued by another whale-watching boat. Other than a thorough drenching and a hair-raising experience, the only real loss was Dale’s Canon—which, of course, didn’t make it (though his SD card did!). The incident was captured by one of the GoPro Cameras mounted in the aft section of the boat.

“Oh my god!”

As you can see from the video, Dale’s very first instinct was to get the shot—even in the face of both total surprise and potentially grave danger.

What would your first impulse have been?
