Interesting Photo of the Day: Extremely Rare White Rhino Flanked by Bodyguards

In September 2012, when we first found the photo below, there were only 7 white rhinos left in the entire world. At the time, this one had been assigned his own squad of heavily armed bodyguards to keep him safe from poachers and whatever else might want to cause him harm. They also removed his horn to further deter poachers. Hereportedly loved people and was very friendly. When this photo was taken, he was said to be about 40 years old—white rhinos can live to be as old as 80:

Today there is just one known male northern white rhino left in the world. His name is Sudan, and now he’s being guarded at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya around the clock in hopes that the species will not go extinct.

Found guilty of poaching endangered species, instant execution, an eye for an eye.

My only problem with this article is that they removed the rino’s horn. Did they sell it as the poachers do, with the only difference being they didn’t kill it? I don’t have an answer so I ask…isn’t there a better way?

It makes me sad that we have to alter the damn creature just to keep greed from killing him. I just dont get this world. Every one of us is guilty

    I just dont get it

Removing the horn seems to be an effective action. The rhinos lose their defense weapon, but to the poachers, it seems the horn is the most precious thing. No interest anymore in killing these impressive and admirable animals. Shame on us, humans. All things must pass, we included.

There are two subspecies. The northern where only a handful of rhinos exist and the southern, which are a lot more abundant.

They’re talking about the Northern White Rhino subspecies:

Picture Correct is very incorrect. There are hundreds of White Rhino in South Africa alone but poaching is a major problem with over 300 poached so far this year all due to a insatiable and lucrative market in the far east. Help us save the Rhino

Good Stuff, do you currently have a flickr account?

There are NOT only 7 White Rhino’s left in the entire world. There are, in fact, a lot more than that….but yes, they are being poached at an alarming rate.
