Photography Tips for Water Reflections, Abstracts, Splashes, Puddles and More

If you believe that waves, waterscapes and waterfalls pretty well use up all the opportunities that water provides for picture-taking, think again. Here are 7 more photography tips with water as remedies for the photo doldrums. Reflections: For a mirror reflection on water the surface must be still and can’t have sunlight shining directly on it. When the light hits just above the shoreline (early morning or evening) leaving the water in shadow, or where something casts it’s shadow across the water, you’ll find such reflections. Abstracts: Intriguing opportunities for abstract reflections occur when the water is gently swelling or rippling.

Breaking Photography Rules

Breaking Photography Rules

Photography is one field that rewards people for breaking the rules. Are you a visual rebel? Like to push boundaries? Pick up a camera. But before you break the basic rules of photography, you have to learn them. There’s a time to follow the rules and a time to throw out the rule book; experience that will help you choose between the two. One of the most basic rules of composition calls for the subject to align along the lines that would be used to divide the photo into nine equal pieces. The Rule of Thirds also says strong lines, like the horizon, should be aligned along the same grid markers, depending on where you want the viewer’s attention focused.

Fashion Photography, Some History

Fashion Photography, Some History

At first, fashion photography consisted of staging the shoots in natural environments using natural poses. Baron Adolf de Meyer was the person who first developed and adopted this practice. In the first part of the 20the century, the magazines that were the leaders were Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. The moguls of the industry still pay tribute to the likes of Yva, Edward Steichen and Cecil Beaton, and George Hoyningen Huene. These were the individuals who help to establish fashion photography in Europe. Irving Penn, Richard Avedon and Martin Munkacsi made significant contributions after World War II. A majority of the artists of earlier times deserted their adopted forms, and took on a more independent and natural style.

Children Portrait Photography Techniques

You try and try to get that perfect shot. If only they’d stay still, if only they’d smile… if only they’d look at the camera! So many useful things could have been done in this time, but ugh, you can’t go without pictures. Here are some helpful tips to get through these blunders. Candid shots are always great. They capture the moment, find hidden smiles, and bring you back to the moment whenever you see the photo. You immediately remember where you were and what was happening with candid shots because they are literally that moment in time. If you know a child that commonly poses every time you get out the camera, you will need to hide it indefinitely.

Photography Composition

Photography Composition

Composition is the heart of the photo. Composition leads to the work of art that starts from inspiration. Inspiration begins when you disconnect with the interior struggles of everyday life and free the spirit to experience the world around you. Truly being in the moment and experiencing nature links you with all around you. It may sound like meditation, but awareness of your surroundings without interference of outside thoughts clears the mind and sharpening your senses. Images appear where you did not see them before. The elements begin to align and art emerges. Don’t rush yourself when seeking that image. Time with nature is a joy all by its self.

How Photography & Art Imagery Enhance Relationships

Time can pass by quickly and circumstances can change drastically. The opportunities to appreciate and enjoy relationships or special occasions spent together can soon disappear, with little if any traces left behind, if we’re not careful. It is a sad but true fact that when many people pass on, the only things they leave behind for their dear ones to reflect on are some memories or a few hastily taken, fuzzy snapshots of themselves. How much better to make, and take, the time to get some quality artistic images made that are a pleasure to look at and enhance, both for ourselves and those that really matter to us as well, the meaningful relationships we’ve had.

Food Photography – Recipe for a Great Image

Food Photography – Recipe for a Great Image

Of all the types of photography that I am involved with I seem to get more questions about food photography than just about everything else combined. I appreciate that not everyone who drives a car wants to know how the engine works so, with that principle in mind, I have prepared this checklist that should yield a more than satisfactory results when photographing food. This may seem like a lot to remember but it does become second nature very quickly. Remember though, that these are only guidelines and not hard and fast rules. The best photographs are taken by those that are prepared to take risks and to learn from the process.

Metering in Photography

Metering in Photography

Many amateur photographers (and even some professionals) often rely on the built in through the lens, or TTL, metering systems provided by their cameras. In the digital age one must pay strict attention to many factors in order to get it right using TTL exposure metering. This article explores some of the important things to consider when using the camera’s TTL metering system. I want to consider four factors to consider when using your camera’s metering system. I presuppose that your camera has some level of user control or you will not be able to control anything but when to press the shutter button. The control factors I will consider are: white balance, aperture control, time value control, and finally, metering control systems.
