Canon MD160 News Release Summary:
New Canon MD100 Series MiniDV camcorders with highest magnification optical zoom lens

United Kingdom, 09 January, 2007: Canon is pleased to announce the Canon Digital Camcorder MD160, a widescreen-ready MiniDV camcorders. The MD160 boasts a 35x optical zoom lens – currently the highest magnification factor offered by any consumer model. With additional photo functionality, the new models also include an Easy shooting mode, quick and intuitive operation of all key controls via a Joystick controller and Canon’s new Quick Start button (MD160 only), designed to allow users to start shooting almost instantly.

“Canon’s new camcorders continue to set the standard in the MiniDV sector and now feature the market’s most powerful optical zoom lens as standard,” said Mogens Jensen, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging Europe. “With the introduction of the MD100 series, incorporating even more user-friendly features, we offer every consumer easy access to powerful home movie making.”

Availability
The MD160 will be available from mid February 2007.

The new MD100 series:
1.  Widescreen-ready camcorders with up to 35x optical zoom lens (1000x/800x digital)
2.  Easy-to-use features and controls, including Joystick and one-push Easy shooting mode
3.  New Quick Start allowing recording to begin almost immediately (MD160)
4.  High quality digital still capture, including compatibility with SD and SDHC (High Capacity) memory cards, benefiting from the DIGIC DV processor (MD160)
35x optical zoom (MD160)

The MD160 features a superior quality 35x optical zoom lens, allowing users to record distant events with clarity. An Electronic Image Stabilizer (EIS) reduces camera shake, most noticeable when shooting at maximum zoom. A high magnification 1000x digital zoom is also available. The MD101 features a powerful 30x optical zoom lens (800x digital).

The MD series is optimised for true 16:9 recording and is equipped with a 2.7” widescreen LCD and an enlarged, wide 0.35” colour EVF (Electronic Viewfinder). Video can be monitored during recording in the way it will appear on a wide TV screen.

Easy shooting
Designed for easy operation, camcorder controls are intuitively positioned for comfortable shooting. A one-push Easy mode is provided – all key controls are set to automatic, allowing beginners to concentrate on holding and moving the camcorder. For users who want to take control of more advanced functions, a Joystick, located on the frame of the LCD screen, allows shooting options to be selected on the on-screen menu with the minimum of fuss.

Quick Start (MD160)
Quick Start is a new function that allows users to begin recording almost immediately and is included on the MD160. It can take most camcorders several seconds to be ready to record after being switched on. With Quick Start, however, a camcorder enters Record mode almost instantly. With one push of the dedicated Quick Start button, the camcorder rests in Standby mode, conserving battery power. With one more push of the button, the camcorder is ready to record in approximately a second. Quick Start allows users to capture events they might otherwise miss – a child’s first steps, for instance, or a match-winning goal.

Digital stills
The MD160 also features digital stills capture. Photos are saved to SD or SDHC (High Capacity) memory cards, allowing more photos to be stored. Short low resolution movie clips, ideal for web use or for sending via email, can also be recorded to card.

With the DIGIC DV image processor, a 640x480 resolution photo can be captured on a memory card at the same time as a video is being recorded to tape. Images of this size are ideally suited to being used with authoring software, to create DVD menu buttons for instance. Printed out as stickers, they also make perfect labels for MiniDV cassettes.

Megapixel recording and DV-in (MD160)
The MD160 offers the increased performance of a Megapixel CCD and an additional DV input connection. For users wishing to edit their footage on a computer, a finished movie can be easily recorded back to a MiniDV cassette in the camcorder. This is a perfect way to archive movie projects. Camera-to-camera recording is also possible.
