Shooting Photos in RAW Format

Blair C Howard compares JPEG and RAW file formats, "And what does all this mean to us? Well, when you work on a RAW file in Photoshop you are working with a much higher quality original than you would if it were a JPG file. You will also have greater control, which means more creativity, when you make your adjustments, corrections and manipulations, and you will not significantly degrade the quality of resulting image. The first time it will be compressed is when you save it as a JPG file, or whatever other file format you choose."          Full Article

Sunset Photography Tips and Techniques

Blair C Howard writes, "A photograph of a sunset by itself just doesn’t work. After all, one setting sun is much like any other. Even if you manage to capture the gorgeous color, without a dominant point of interest the image will still end up looking rather boring. Now, having said that I should tell you that, without some forward planning, a dominant point of interest is not an easy thing to include. It might be the silhouette of a sailboat on a glittering, backlit ocean, a barn, a horse, a cow, a tractor, or even a lone tree in the foreground."          Full Article

Canon Powershot A630 and A640 Review at DC Resource

Digital Camera Resource wrote a review of the Canon Powershot A630 and A640 and said: "Photo quality similar on both cameras -- very good. The A630 and A640 took well-exposed photos with accurate colors, pleasing sharpness, and minimal purple fringing. Noise levels were low through ISO 200, and at ISO 400 something surprising happened: the 10 Megapixel A640 performed better than the 8 Megapixel A630. You should have no problem making midsize prints at that setting -- and maybe larger."        Full Article

Managing Light Sources in Digital Photography

Connie Fillmore writes, "Photography blends science with art. The photographer is the artist who engraves his creation with light and shade. Science has gifted the artist a technically advanced digital camera for him to captivate life with it. But he must know to decipher the codes of light. Natural light sources like the sun and the moon are considered the best light sources. These lights often invade indoors and make natural shots come alive. Men have created artificial lights like the ordinary bulb, the tungsten halogen lamp or the bright photoflood."          Full Article

Developing a Digital Photography Workflow

Steve Paxton from paxtonprints.com writes, "At some point, most photographers develop a series of routines for capturing, copying, and processing their digital photographs. Consistency in how you handle your images after they are shot is nearly as important as the techniques you employ to compose and shoot your images in the field. In this paper, I am going to describe my own digital workflow, from the time my shots leave the camera, to the basic editing adjustments I make to nearly all my final photographs in Photoshop, to finally saving and backing them up on my computer."         Full Article

Computer Monitors and Color Profiles

Mike Kruske writes, "The first and most basic step in achieving correct digital color is having some sort or calibration and profiling in use with your monitor. The first part of this process is to take a look at the type and direction of ambient light you are using around the monitor. You should not have any direct light shining on the monitor screen, and using fluorescent lighting will alter displayed colors. Other types of light directly on the screen, especially bright light, will alter the brightness, contrast and color temperature levels of the display."          Full Article

Sony Cybershot T10 Review at Trusted Reviews

Trusted Reviews wrote a review of the Sony Cybershot T10 and said: "Image quality is a bit of a mixed bag. As already mentioned, you’ll be noise free up to 200 ISO and the Super Steady Shot functionality should mean that you won’t have to dial things up much higher than that too often. The macro setting can also produce impressive results for a camera this compact. However, I did notice that the colours sometimes took on a garish look, no matter what colour setting I employed. Also, the flash had a habit of washing out detail on some shots, while being perfectly balanced on others."
