Black and White Photography Article

Sam Zaydel writes, "Black and White photography has something color does not. It reproduces natural world using all possible shades of gray, all the way from white to black. Whenever I look at a Black and White photo, especially one which I have not ever seen before, I immediately begin to process the image, and paint the scene in my mind. When we cannot immediately tell color, we use our minds to reconstruct the image, as it were in real life. We pay more attention to the intricate details of a Black and White photo for this very reason."         Full Article

Personal Photography Tips from Stephen Cornfield

Stephen Cornfield writes, "As a photographer in Newmarket Ontario, I have found that no matter where you are, there is a seemingly endless amount of subjects to shoot. All you have to do at times is to open your eyes and go find them. Sometimes when I go out I do not know what I will find. Often, though, I will have an idea of what I would like to shoot, but finding the exact subject and location for my idea do not always come together. In the Newmarket area there are many outdoor places that can provide you with photographic opportunities. Fairy Lake (my favorite) and the trial systems are just a couple."         Full Article

Samsung Digimax GX-1L Review at Steve's Digicams

Steve's Digicams wrote a review of the Samsung GX-1L and said: "Shooting performance is typical for an entry-level dSLR. From power-on till the first image was captured measured 1 second, while waking it from sleep mode took only 8/10 second. Shutter lag, the delay between depressing the shutter and capturing the image, was 1/10 second when pre-focused, and between 2/10 and 8/10 second including autofocus time for a high-contrast subject, depending on the degree of focus change. Shot-to-shot delay averaged about 4/10 second without flash; use of the internal flash extended shot-shot delay to between 1 and 4.5 seconds, depending on subject distance.           Full Article

Using Selection Tools in Adobe Photoshop

James Middleton writes, "Out of all of the selection tools currently available within Adobe Photoshop, the most useful for general and precise selecting has to be the Polygonal Lasso. It will not fill an area with a selection, nor will it trace the outlines of a shape. What it will do is deliver perfect control. In the past, some of my students have expressed some apprehension over using this tool due to the 'sticky-dart-around-the-screen' habit it seems to display. Let me make one thing clear - there really is nothing to be afraid of with this tool. If used correctly, the Polygonal Lasso will behave itself and, in the long run, save you masses of time and yield perfect selections."         Full Tutorial

Professional Photo Enlargement Techniques

Mike Kruske writes, "To produce the larger print sizes now available on the affordable medium format digital photo printers, requires photo enlargement techniques. Most people simply open the original photo file in their version of Photoshop, and resize the file by entering the width and height dimensions, resolution dpi they want, leave the resample option checked and click the OK thinking all is just great. This will resample the photo file and degrade the original image quality. Photoshop uses a simple bicubic resampling method to resize the file."         Full Tutorial

Professional Digital Workflow Tips for Photoshop

Robert Provencher writes, "Let give you a "snapshot" overview of our digital workflow. You should know that all the stratgies we've created in our studio are not new. They are essentially the same as when we shot film. Nothing has changed, except the media, the turnaround times (faster, much faster!), and, of course, the huge learning curve. Which we've over-complicated beyond anything that makes sense. Funny thing is, I've come to realize that the learning curve is quite small when you do only the things required and when you use only the essential tools.  Here are the seven steps to digital photography workflow:"         Full Tutorial

Pentax Announces the Optio A20

Pentax News Release Excerpt:
The Optio A20 produces clear, high-quality images with 10.0 effective megapixels. The superb level of resolution makes it possible to produce prints with crisp detail even when the photo is enlarged to A#* size. The Optio A20 image sensor is a large 1/1.8 inch CCD with a wide light-sensitive area, which realizes superior tone reproduction, fine textures, and greater noise reduction. The SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism, developed by Pentax, features two gyro sensors that detect the amount of shake and an image sensor (CCD) that moves both horizontally and vertically to reduce the camera shake. The SR mechanism effectively prevents shake at the instant that the shutter is clicked to take a photograph.         Initial Review
